Welcome to our new spotlight series, where we introduce you to some of the great authors on the SocialTalent learning platform. With more than 100 experts delivering high-quality content in all areas of workplace excellence, we are proud to have a faculty who are not only highly experienced in their respective fields, but also engage instructors from diverse backgrounds.

Today we are going to meet Maisha L. Kanon. Maisha, founder and lead student of The Collab Lab, describes herself as a recruiter, sourcer and facilitator, and is SocialTalent’s recruitment AI expert!

Q. Can you give us some background on your experience and history in this field?

From the dynamic environment of Hollywood to the innovative hubs of Silicon Valley, my journey as a Talent Advisor has been diverse and distinctive. Early in my career, I was heavily involved in the entertainment industry, helping emerging talent secure their first major opportunities – what I like to call “The Hollywood Years.”

After this I switched to the retail sector, where I worked with renowned brands such as Hot Topic and Torrid. This role took me to different parts of the country, where I contributed to the launch of stores in numerous shopping centers. Later, my career path led me into the realm of technology and innovation. Here I have found top talent for market leaders such as Google, LinkedIn and Verizon. It was an era of constant learning and experimentation, a time when I combined traditional recruitment techniques with innovative approaches.

My contributions extended to building formidable teams at companies like GitHub and Procore. My experience with Roblox was particularly enlightening and reignited my passion for education and mentorship.

Throughout these varied roles, one theme remained constant: the need for adaptability. The recruitment field is constantly changing and my journey, marked by various challenges, from layoffs to global crises, has shaped my perspective and approach. It has strengthened my belief in continuous learning and evolution.

Q. What are you currently working on?

I currently teach and facilitate at The Collab Lab, Inc.™. I started the company in late 2022 and am deeply committed to advancing professional development at the intersection of technology and talent consulting.

I have designed Learning Labs that are not only interactive, but also highly relevant to today’s challenges that Talent Advisors face. At the heart of my approach are core values: active listening, intentional communication, cultivating community, authenticity and a spirit of experimentation. These Labs are precision designed and intended to enable Talent Advisors to enhance their skills and professional journeys. The end goal is improved effectiveness and increased collaboration and connectedness within their teams/cohort.

My collaboration with SocialTalent has been extremely rewarding and has expanded the reach of my insights and expertise.

Q. Can you give us a detailed overview of what your content covers?

Naturally. I feel fortunate to have been able to provide content on recruiting with AI. It focuses on how we can use artificial intelligence to enhance our professional capabilities, allowing us to excel more efficiently in our fields.

We juggle a lot as Talent Advisors, and I believe artificial intelligence will allow us to delegate tasks that we would rather put aside. This frees up more time for areas that require a human touch, such as building relationships with internal and external partners.

Q. Why is this an important topic of study today?

AI is changing the game in talent acquisition. Our entire industry – and indeed the world – is in the midst of some major changes. Take OpenAI for example; in just nine months, ChatGPT has taken off like wildfire, reaching an estimated 100 million users. And recently we even saw the launch of ChatGPT Enterprise.

Based on the words of Andrew Ng, artificial intelligence is similar in meaning to electricity. Thinking about the immense potential of such an instrument is both a privilege and a responsibility. Every Talent Advisor must approach AI with a combination of curiosity and caution.

Q. What do you hope the students will gain from completing these missions? What problems do they solve?

I hope these missions answer important questions such as:

  • How can AI improve my recruitment workflows?
  • What ethical considerations arise with AI in talent acquisition?
  • How can I maintain human-centeredness in an AI-powered world?

For those who are already excelling in your role, consider this content as your guide. It helps you assess the relevance of AI tools and shows how to integrate them seamlessly into your current workflows.

My main goal is to provide you with practical insights, introduce you to cutting-edge tools, and perhaps even challenge some of your existing beliefs about AI.

As AI reshapes the fabric of recruitment, it is critical that Talent Advisors remain agile, always fueled by the hunger to learn and grow. This shift is not only necessary; it’s exciting. And I am truly excited to guide you through this evolution on the SocialTalent platform.
